Manson Renard, Rei's best friend and room mate, took another toothpick from his back pocket, twirling it in his mouth as he leaned his back against the rusted railing, looking out towards the rest of the slums at an awkward angle. The busy, bustling sounds from the rest of Pavane filled his ears and soothed him as he bit on his toothpick. "...Yeah. I'm not going to get a chance like this again," Rei sighed, pulling his hands from his pockets and resting his elbow on the railing beside Manson, looking similarly out into the town. "You and I both know this town is rotten. Something has to be done about it." "What if they find out that you are a Vampire? Not such a pretty situation then, yeah? Besides, I won't be able to protect you here anymore. You'll be on your own, you know.""...Yeah." Manson let out a small sigh as the silence began to set in. Before long, it was broken by Manson, "What about the violence? Ghouls everywhere are going to rally behind your words. Who knows what sorts of nasty riots might break out.""I've thought about that, too. I can't control what each and every person decides to do. If they take my words as a declaration of war, so be it. What I can do, however, is state my position. This uprising is to be free of murder, free of deaths. Our goal is to usurp power, not slaughter innocents." "Well said.""Do you mind being my medium into the ghoul community? I'm going to need some spokesperson, some catalyst. I will need someone - a ghoul - to be a leader too, and I couldn't think of anyone more qualified than you. I'd hate to ask you, but..." "Don't say another word. I know. You never did hit it off with many ghouls before. Don't worry. You've got my undying support, Rei. Just make sure that you know what you are doing and I will take it from there, yeah?""Yeah!" And with that he was off.
Rei stood up all night in his tiny room, cramped up in the corner on his cracking desk with many crumpled papers scattered around him by his feet. Nothing sounded right. He needed a speech so breath-takingly captivating, so intrinsically motivating that he would be hard pressed to find any ghoul that could resist the urge to rise up, to fight for what they knew deep, deep down that they were being deprived of. He twirled the pen in his hand, as a sudden stroke of genius hit him. He frantically wrote on the paper like a madman for an hour before stopping. As he set down his dying pen, he held up the sheet of paper, inspecting and reviewing each and every word until he was satisfied with what he had written. "With this, the rebellion will begin."
Manson had attracted more attention than even Rei had imagined. Countless ghouls had gathered in the cramped space of The Undergroud, a hidden cave essentially only known to those in Middle Pavane. It was dark with very few weak lights scattered around the cave. It also smelt like a sewer, and the plethora of sweating, cramped bodies did not help. Come to think of it, there were more people than Rei could count! He wasn't quite used to such a crowd. It may very well have been the entire ghoul population, a revelation that Rei could only dream of. Banter and murmurs washed through the waves of ghouls as Rei pushed his way through the masses, tripping and stumbling as he approached an open podium. He beckoned for everyone to give him his attention. It took awhile, but the voices died down to a controlled volume as Rei looked out into the crowd. It was much more intimidating here in front of everyone than he thought it would be, but nonetheless spoke with sincerity. "Hello, fellow ghouls. My name is Rei Nyx. Some of you may know me, some may not. Nonetheless, there is something I am certain each and every one of you similarly carries within the deepest regions of your soul: a desire for change. A desire for a new beginning. A desire for a new life in which ghouls can be equal."
He paused for a moment to assess the reactions of the people in the crowd. "...It has been too many years that we have sat idly by simply because we don't have the power that some of the other races possess. Crippling magic, strong, powerful bodies... But what we have failed to realize all these years is that we were made as humans with a tool that no other race possesses. A human will. We are smart, we are versatile, but moreover, we have an undying will to accomplish what we want to change. A will to attain that which we desire."Another pause for assessment. "Therefore, my friends, there is but one thing we can do now. We will rise up and we will take the power of the other races! Take the power we rightfully deserve!""Now, we would be idiots to charge into a chair meeting and take the power all at once. There are competent guards. Besides, most of us are unarmed. But don't worry. I have a plan. The new movie, 1984, will be featured at the movie theater tomorrow at midnight. There will be big names there, I can be sure. The goal is to cause chaos, destruction, and frenzy. We will come in, we will eat, and we will conquer."Another pause. "This should serve as a way to make our presence known. We can assess how the Council responds to this event and take further action accordingly. Many of you know of my friend, Manson. He above anyone else knows his way around Upper Pavane. He above anyone else you and I can trust our very fates to reliably. He above anyone else can lead the ghouls to a new life full of hope, love, and long-deserved freedom."He debated stopping there, but he felt obligated to add, "Now, before anyone goes in there and does anything rash, properly assess what the purpose of this mission is. It's not to kill. It is to make a presence. Please, as you are rioting, remember that power is the ultimate goal. I am not asking you to genocide the other races. I'm asking you to find it in yourselves to be more mature and accepting than the cruel races that have put us in the position that we are in now.... Thank you."
