It has been said that not a single person who has suffered to duel the Grand Witch herself has come out of it alive, yet rarely does she even dignify the common (and quite annoyingly so) challenges she will receive with more than an empty stare. Some suggest her power comes from her years and years of knowledge of magick, having a longer life span than any fairy, witch, or elf in existence. Others suggest her power comes from a natural penchant for the magicks. Still others suggest her mastery over elven and fairy magicks have made her stronger than any race could ever hope to be. In all cases, however, the people would only be partially correct. She and Urella, the Great Witch, share these characteristics having been alive since before Pavane even existed. [break][break]
Her true power comes not from the magick she has learned through fairy and elven practice, but through a secret kept so close to her heart, not a breathing soul has heard nor seen of a power hidden within her, slowly chipping away at her fading soul. Elizabeth's father was a famous researcher in a time before Pavane who had generated much acclaim for his tremendous work in the field of sleep research. He had made an interesting revelation rejecting the notion of an unconscious mind and instead suggesting a "bilateral unity between the conscious and the previously considered 'unconscious' mind." This ground breaking research was praised among the scientific community at the time, but it's application was largely unknown. Many asked the goddesses for information about the properties of the unconscious mind, but they remained silent on the issues. [break][break]
It was in this shadow that Elizabeth grew up in. She was a moody teenager, very much filling a gothic stereotype for her age. She was often bullied by her peers, attaining the nickname "Blackass." She would often get angry at them, attacking them when they called her by that name. This caused her to have many problems with the authority figures around her, so she eventually decided to just become her father's assistant and quickly became versed in his research. However, before she became a functional recluse, she made two friends named Rei and Amy who instead coined the nicer nickname "Midnight" for her. She won't let anyone else call her by that name, and, although she won't admit it, she has grown a secret attachment for it. [break][break]
She began to have high hopes in her research efforts with her father, which she often shared with Rei. She suggested a connection between the brain's "unconscious mind" and the goddesses themselves. However, she had no way of testing the theory in it's entirety because she had no access to cadavers...[break][break]
Rei's death came as a surprise to her as it did everyone close to him at the time. Amy would often lash out at her, saying it was her fault. She would refuse to talk about the issue, however, only repeatedly denying her involvement in his death. Because of this tension, the two grew apart and once again Elizabeth was alone. Upset, she returned to her research in a crazed determination. She dissected Rei's brain in full haste and wasted no minute of her day trying to discover what the connection was. However, because this was before elven innovation had taken off to the point it is in Pavane, she had no real way to discover the secrets of the human brain. Frustrated at her impulsiveness, she spent days without sleep staring at his brain to no avail.[break][break]
It took her three days before she gave up. She fell asleep at her table, muttering, "Damn you, Aheira. If I was born with magick, I'd already figured it out. I know you can hear me. I know what the 'unconscious' is, too. What, did you think I was a dumbass?"[break][break]
